After enduring 3 weeks of cold and rain we headed south today. First we drove to another section of Theodore Roosevelt National Park about 10 miles from the campsite only to discover the visitor center was closed for staff training. We stood at the door in a freezing wind for about 10 minutes before finding out they were not going to open. I suggested to the ranger that a sign on the door would nice letting people know they were not going to open, so they put one up.
The day started out in the upper 40's but the wind was ferocious, blowing at over 30mph. Driving with the trailer was a real challenge and as we were headed almost straight into the wind and climbing in altitude our gas mileage plummeted. We were going from Medora, ND to Custer, SD and there was a stretch of about 150 miles with few towns so I was afraid I might not be able to find any gas. I checked the weather to see if maybe we could wait a day or two but the forecast showed high winds for the next 4 or 5 days. I finally checked my Gas Buddy app on the phone and found one station about half way so we kept trucking. By the time we got to Spearfish, SD the wind had subsided some and we made it all the way to Custer, SD where we are staying in a very nice Goodsam campground called Buffalo Ridge.
Between howling winds, two lane highways and boring scenery I did not take any pictures today so here is my beautiful wife Nancy showing off the futon we put in our camper in place of the benches and table it came with.
We finally saw 70 deg F today! Actually almost got to 80 in South Dakota. Of course a cold front is coming through and highs will only be in the 60s the rest of the week.
Gas, when we could find it, was from $2.29 to $2.69/gal for regular.
