July 15th Seward

Another cloudy day in the Land of the Missing Sun. At least it did not rain. Temps were in the low 50s and not too much wind. We took a bus tour of Seward, which took about 5 minutes, then went to Exit Glacier.
Again, it was amazing to see how fast the glacier is disappearing.
The area covered by the glacier in the 1960s is now covered by 30 ft tall trees. In another 50 years there won't be anything left to see.

The cold air coming off the glacier lowers the surrounding temperature by at least 10 degrees.

After the glacier tour, our tour guides took us to a local inn where we had refreshments while they told us about their life in Alaska.

They were an interesting couple who came to Alaska in the early 1970s from California.

They lived in a remote log cabin for 3 years without electricity or running water, growing their own food and hunting. They had some really interesting tales.

After lunch Nancy and I drove back to Seward to do some geocaching and to visit a local museum which was quite interesting.

We then met the rest of the group for an evening dinner cruise to view wildlife and glaciers.

We saw lots of different birds, sea lions, sea otters, eagles, and whales.

This is the largest glacier we saw but we could not get too close to it because it has retreated so far from the bay.

These are some of the mountains around Resurrection Bay at twilight.

This is a view of Seward from the boat.
