There is a bumper sticker here that says, “Homer, a quaint little drinking village with a fishing problem” and that is about right.
Most of the stores here on the spit are either charter boats operations, fish processing, bait shops or bars.
About half the people in our caravan went deep sea fishing today and I was glad we did not sign up, it was cool and raining steadily when we awoke this morning. We slept in until about 7:30 then went into town to shop and see the sights.
First we went to the Alaska Wildlife Refuge visitor center which had some very nice displays and a couple of short films. As we were leaving the building we saw this moose cow and two calves close to the building.
We visited a couple of souvenir shops then went for a drive in the country about 15 miles out of town along the bay. It was too cloudy and rainy to see much but we did see a lot of pretty wildflowers.
After lunch we did some geocaching then walked down the beach.
The tides here are amazing, rising as much as 24 ft vertically. Today there is a 18 ft difference in low tide and high tide. At low tide there are huge mud flats exposed as the water recedes. They warn people to stay off the mud flats because they can be like quicksand, trapping people who are then drowned by rising tides.
The people who went fishing had a good trip with everyone catching some fish and reaching the limit. We will have a fish fry tomorrow night.
Temps have been in low 50s all day with light rain most of the day.
Tomorrow we head for Seward.
