O Canada

O Canada (Post for July 19th that could not post due to no internet service)
Today started out clear and cold. Temps were in the low 30s and there was a light frost but most
importantly the sun was out! Here is view from our campsite:

We delayed our departure and made a quick trip back into Glacier NP
to photograph the mountains.

It was glorious! Very few people were in the park that early and there was little wind so were
getting pretty reflections of the mountains on the water. We also saw an eagle soaring over the lake.

Sadly, we saw the search crews still looking for the woman that drowned yesterday.
As we were leaving the park we came around a curve and had to stop for a large bear standing in the road.

He slowly ambled off the road into an opening where Nancy took this photo.

We then headed north to Canada. It was a beautiful drive just east of the mountains so we had the mountains on our left and the praires on our right.
We sailed through customs without a hitch although he seemed surprised that someone from TN was going to Alaska without a gun. Probably had to do with all the duct tape on the truck window. Here we are at the border with our friend Yoda.

We got to Waterton Lakes National Park about 11am. There is actually a small town inside the park
close to the famous Prince Albert Hotel. The hotel is gorgeous and the town is very quaint.

We decided to take a shuttle bus up to Red Rock Canyon because trailers are prohibited on part of the road because of construction. The shuttle was a 15 passenger van and 13 of us piled into it. We were on the back seat and it was very warm as temps were in the 60s and sunny. Two more people crammed in at the next stop so it was a pretty miserable 40 minute ride up the mountain. After we got started the driver asked how many people were planning to stay at the top and return on the next shuttle which would not be until 2.5 hrs later. No one wanted to stay that long so he said he hoped no one already at the top wanted to come back on his shuttle. When we got to the top the driver said he stay there for 30 minutes but everyone was afraid to leave the bus because there were people waiting to go back down the hill. The Red Rock Canyon was only a few hundred yards from the bus stop so Nancy and I decided to take turns hiking to the canyon while the other stayed with the bus to hold our seats. Nancy went first and was back to the bus in about 10 minutes so I quickly hiked up to the canyon and took a few pictures and started back.
Even though we had only been
there about 20 minutes I could see Nancy frantically waving at me to return to the bus. I sprinted the last
hundred yards as 17 people tried to get on the bus. Finally, the driver said that another bus was on the
way and another couple volunteered to wait for it and we all made it back on time.

We then headed toward Banff, again with the mountains on our left and praires on the right.

We stopped at a provincial campground about 10 miles from Banff so no WIFI tonight.
Hope to find WIFI tomorrow. Cost $29 CAN for site with electricity but no water or sewage. We do have great view of the mountains.

PS It is now Monday morning. Hope y'all like these pictures because I had to get up at 4am to post them because internet service is so bad here.

  1. That is funny about the border.

Also, it sounds like they need more shuttles to Red Rock Canyon. Sorry that after such a long crowded ride you weren't even able to really enjoy the destination!
