Mendeltna to Anchorage Fri July 9th

Amazing! We awoke to a cloudless sky and temps near 50 degress. Our campground , Mendeltna Lodge, was in a very pretty location. The campground is not the best, only 15 amp service and no WiFi but the lodge was a beautiful rustic building with a restaurant and bar and the food last night was wonderful.

There should be rule however that campgrounds should not be allowed to raise chickens, especially roosters. This rooster started crowing at 4AM.

The drive from Mendeltna to Anchorage was very pretty.

We saw 2 large glaciers along the way.

This glacier looks narrow from this viewpoint but is actually 4 miles wide. This is one of the few glaciers that is not melting appreciably.

This was an old coal mining town museum. This coal washer was assembled on site then the mill was built around it. The mill was built and managed by the US Navy to provide coal for ships but they closed it 6 months after opening it because they switched to oil. Government waste is nothing new apparently.

The rivers here usually meander through wide flat valleys but can be fast and furious in narrow places.

Shannon, how would you like to run these rapids? Those waves are at least 5 feet high.

The road was pretty good with only a few frost heaves between Mendeltna and Palmer. From Palmer to Anchorage we had 4 and 6 lane divided highway.

This is our campsite in Anchorage.

Tonight we are going out for dinner and a show afterward.

  1. 5 ft?? no thanks! unless there are no rocks to worry about...then maybe.
I really like the picture that has the road in the foreground, then waayy in the distance are those really pretty mountains...I almost didn't see them! They look ghostly.
